The Draft

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 5:45 pm

As we get closer to the draft, speculation increases about who the Green Bay Packers will choose with the 5th pick. To figure that out you have to consider who will be chosen before the Packers make their pick. Reggie Bush will certainly be taken with the first pick. There is a chance Houston would trade down but whoever moves up would take Bush for sure. The second pick is an interesting one, the Saints are the biggest candidate to trade down. The Jets may move up from four if they really want Matt Leinhart. If the Saints keep the pick at number two, they might grab Mario Williams as best value for that pick. The real need for them though is offensive tackle and D’Brickshaw Ferguson fits that bill. They may just take him at number two or trade to the fourth spot with the Jets and grab him there. The third pick is the Titans, if Leinhart is available they will take him. Plan B is Vince Young if Matt Leinhart is gone. The fourth spot is the Jets or possibly the Saints. The New York Jets if they stay put will have to decide on a quarterback or Mario Williams to replace Jon Abraham if the Saints dont grab Williams. The we have our Green Bay Packers next at the fifth pick. Ted Thompson hasnt given too much information on what the Packers thoughts are except for a hint about not passing on a player if he could be the next Michael Jordan. I think thats a bluff reference to the Packers picking Vince Young. Based on need and best player available the Packers would love to have Mario Williams available and would pick him. The more likely pick is AJ Hawk the linebacker from Ohio State. He fills a big need for the packers and is projected to be a top ten pick. Here is how i see the possibilities of what the Packers will do with this pick.
70% Select AJ Hawk
20% Select Mario Williams(good chance he will be gone)
8% trade down in the draft to pick up more choices(lot of holes to fill and could pickup a linebacker almost equal to Hawk in mid first round still)
1% Select Vince Young(If he’s available and Ted Thompson really does believe he is a Michael Jordan talent.)
1% Select Jay Cutler(If Ted Thompson doesnt think Aaron Rodgers is the man, he might grab the last top qb left).

Picks 2 and 4 will really determine the Packers choices at #5. It will be interesting to see what happens. I would love to see the Packers take Hawk and sign Arrington and make a weakness on the team a huge strength. Taking Mario Williams would also make DE a sudden strength. Im sure he could defend the run better on first down than Kabeer. Whomever he picks, Ted Thompson has to hit it big with this pick and a couple others. He wants to build through the draft so you had better make great picks.
