Packers should draft a qb

Filed under: Draft — Administrator @ 8:27 am

I’m going to go out on a limb and guarantee Green Bay drafts a qb. How high the pick is might give some insight on how good Ted Thompson feels about Aaron Rodgers. If he uses one of his three top picks then he might not feel entirely comfortable Rodgers is the guy. I’m thinking third round he looks for the best qb still on the board. Guys who might be available in that round are Colt Brennan(Hawaii), Andre Woodson(Kentucky), and Erik Ainge(TN). You might remember Ainge for torching the Badgers for 365 yards in the outback bowl back on Jan. 1st. He’s the biggest of the three at 6′5, 225. If Thompson is nervous about Rodgers he may grab Brian Brohm in the first round but I really feel it will be one of these guys in the third or even fourth round. I hope Thompson doesnt wait too long or they could be gone. They most likely will be holding a clipboard all season long but they do need that time to learn the Packer offense. They could even be the #2 qb if Thompson decides to roll the dice and not bring in a veteran quarterback. My choice would be to sign Trent Dilfer now and get him in to the mini camps and OTA’s so he is up to speed with the offense also. There isn’t much else out there for a decent veteran qb, don’t procrastinate Ted!

Brett Favre bobbleheads

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 11:21 am

After Brett announced he was retiring I immediately ordered 4 new bobbleheads made with Bretts final career numbers. We are preselling those right now on ThePackerMan.com. Its going to take about 90 days to get them done. If you buy now you get free shipping. These may be the last bobbles we make of Brett. Once he signs those retirement papers it becomes much harder to get anything made. You have to get NFL approval and licensing rights and then get Bretts approval(most likely through his agent) and licensing fees also. You probably wont see much made after the next few months.

YOu can pre order them right off the front page of our website.

http://store.thepackerman.com/

We also have most of our other Brett Favre autographed items listed on the front page. We ran out of most items in the days after he retired. I just got back in some mini helmets, Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year, 8×10 “the audible” from SB 31 and have one pink mini signed by Brett and Deanna. The highland mint retirement photomint has also been a hot seller. What has been a hot seller all year long are 8×10 photos of Brett with all the records he has broken. 421 photos, 149 wins, 250 consecutive starts, and more.

http://store.thepackerman.com/brfa8xph.html

We are sold out of autographed helmets, footballs, and jerseys right now. We should have more in about 30 days. I spoke to his agent and they said even Bretts own website is oversold and Brett hasnt signed anything for a while. They hope to get him to start signing in the next week or so but are letting him take a break. The remaining orders we have on the site should be filled in the next 30 days and then we will put them back in stock as well. Hopefully there will be some new stuff signed with Bretts final career numbers. We should have some new Tshirts as well soon.

Brett Favre doesnt like Hawaii

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 12:25 am

Brett Favre has again backed out of the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. I was a little surprised since he had been voted in as the starter and had not gone in a while. Maybe its a good sign that Brett will be back. He didnt even come up with a fictitious injury this year as he had in the past. It reminded me of sitting next to Brett during an autograph signing we were conducting with him in 97. His agent was asking him about what he wanted to do while in Hawaii. He replied that he wasnt going and would just make up some injury to get out of it. I was like “Brett how can you not want to go to Hawaii”? I had actually just gone there the last year for the Pro Bowl and would have loved to go again. Brett replied he just didnt like the 10 or 11 hour flight from Mississippi to get there and back. Hawaii was just “no big deal” to him. When a friend said its going to be nice to see Brett play in the pro bowl I said dont bet on it. I just wish I had the same insight when I said last week the Packers were going to kill the Giants. That one is going to last as long as 4th and 26!

Tackle Adrian Peterson

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 12:35 am

The 7-1 Green Bay Packers face the 3-5 Minnesota Vikings this Sunday at Lambeau field. The winning formula is simple, tackle Adrian Peterson. He is really the only weapon the Vikes have on offense. Last week he ripped the Chargers defense for a NFL record 296 yards. Green Bay had better put in some defensive plans to key on him or he could go for another record day. What worries me is the left side of the Vikes offensive line, Bryant McKinnie and Steve Hutchinson are both huge powerful run blockers. When Kabeer lines up against McKinnie he is giving up about a hundred pounds. In previous years I have seen him been thrown around like a rag doll trying to defend the run against them. I would make sure that doesnt happen this Sunday. Cullen Jenkins is a much better defender against the run but can he hold up? The Packers might even consider a 5 man line since they know the run is coming. You still have to be careful if Peterson bursts through the line that he doesnt go all the way. I would have AJ Hawk shadow him all day. If they tackle Adrian Peterson, the Packers will be 8-1.

Packers beat Giants to go 2-0

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 1:01 am

Brett Favre throws 3 touchdown passes and wins his NFL record 149th game by a quarterback. The final score is 35-13 as the Packers roll in the second half. It was a tough first half and Green Bay was down at halftime. They came out in the second half and took over the game both offensively and defensively. Bubba Franks and Donald Lee caught touchdown passes, the first game in a long time the tight ends have made a significant contribution. The running backs also contributed with a solid running game, Deshawn Wynn had a nice touchdown run and 50 total yards rushing.

Green Bay certainly played a much better game than they did last week against the Eagles when two big special teams play gave them a lucky win.(we will take them any way we can get them) Brett played better, the offensive line was a little better, running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers all improved. The defense gave up some yards in the first half and then settled down in the second half and were able to attack a little more when they had a lead. I like the fired up mentality but Nick Barnett and Brady Poppinga need to control themselves and not pick up stupid personal fouls.

If the Packers can beat a tough San Diego Chargers team next week and go 3-0, people will know they are for real. With Detroit beating Minnesota today in overtime the Packers and Lions are in first place while the Vikings and Bears share last.(feels good to say that) It would be fun to see games on Thanksgiving and end of the season against the Lions determine the NFC north champion. Im also rooting for Brett Favre to break Dan Marinos touchdown record at home against the Bears. Wouldnt that be fun watching Urlacher congratulate him!

Sundays are really more enjoyable with a Packer win, hard to believe it has been 6 straight now. Lets keep it going Packers!

2007 preview

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 8:56 pm

The 2007 Green Bay Packer season is about to get underway this Sunday when the Packers take on the Philadelphia Eagles. Once again look for ThePackerMan.com to be selling before and after the game at the corner of Armed Forces and Holmgren way. Thats the Midway hotel parking lot and just across the street from the Stadium View bar and Brett Favres Steakhouse. Look for the white tent full of Green Bay Packer merchandise!

Its a big year for Brett Favre and the Packers as he is set to break almost all NFL quarterbacking records. Look out Dan Marino because Favre only needs 7 more touchdown passes to reach 421 and break the all time record. Brett also only needs 3 more wins to reach 150 and become the all time winningest quarterback. The record that will take an entire strong season is the all time yardage passing. Brett needs a little over 3800 yards to take down this record also.

All of the records wont mean much to Brett Favre if the Packers dont have a successful 2007 season. With a little harder schedule this year it wont be easy to do. Brett will have to carry the offense as he always does but without a legitimate running back on the roster it may be even more on Bretts shoulders. The defense came on during the last 4 games of last season and looks to be on track to continue to improve! The season will probably depend on them becoming a top 10 defense in the NFL. Keys will be stuffing the run on early downs and creating a pass rush that doesnt allow the other teams receivers to get deep. Al Harris and Charles Woodson are great at playing the bump and run and jumping routes but you cant leave them back there too long or they can get burned. Safety looks to be in much better hands this year with Nick Collins showing improvement late last year and Atari Bigby coming out of nowhere in preseason to look spectacular. This allowed Ted Thompson to finally get rid of Marquand Manuel who had been a total bust since coming to Green Bay. Im sure Manuel didnt shed too many tears as he packed up his millions and left Green Bay. You cant have too many mistakes like that made and still be a successful team but hopefully Bigby will make up for it with a regular season to match the preseason.

My prediction for 2007 is 9-7 and a wildcard spot in the playoffs. Of course they have to avoid major injuries but so does everyone else in the NFC North. No one has enough depth to cover a couple major losses. The Bears will win the division but Green Bay will avenge themselves with a big win at Chicago in the playoffs! Go Pack Go!

Packers move on to OTA’s

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 5:04 pm

The Green Bay Packers are now in the middle of organized team activities or OTA’s for June. Brett Favre will be here for most of them while some players such as Charles Woodson will not attend and work out on their own.
Hopefully the team will move past the distractions of the Moss trade not being made and the “he did say it, he didnt say it” Favre demanding a trade rumors. Only time will tell if Ted Thompson was smart in avoiding the Randy Moss trade and not drafting some immediate offensive help. The second round pick Brandon Jackson could become a huge part of the offense. Coming from a zone blocking scheme probably played a huge part in his selection. James Jones the wide receiver from San Jose state taken in the third round got some good reviews after mini camp. This is a pick Thompson is under a little scrutiny for, most people had him graded 4th to 6th round. I dont mind a sleeper pick now and then but it seems like Ted Thompson is always looking for these type of picks. If Jones turns out to be a good or great player, then Thompson looks like a genius. Myself, i would have rather have had Randy Moss by trading this pick. Same with the first round pick. He might be great but I would have rather seen a wide receiver or safety drafted there to fill a bigger hole on the team. Defense does win championships though, if the same defense shows up the whole season this year that showed up for the last four games of 2006, the Packers will be in the playoffs. Im sure Brett Favre will welcome that!
